Install on hard disk Print E-mail

First backup all your sensible and important data (use an external hard disk attached with USB2 or Firewire). This is not because this process will hurt your data, but for your own safety, especially if you are new to GNU/Linux operating systems, be ready to recover your installation.

Now please read this tutorial and learn how to turn a fresh Debian installation into an ArtistX customization.

Have fun!

STEP 1: INSTALL THE DEBIAN UNIVERSAL OPERATING SYSTEM

First of all shrink your Windows partition to make room for the new system. There is a tutorial at Howtoforge but take in consideration the possibility of dedicating a whole new hard disk to your GNU/Linux installation especially if you are new to this kind of systems.

Now you need to download  from here the Net Installation CD image (as of the moment I'm writing is called debian-40r1-i386-netinst.iso) and now you can burn the cd from this .iso image. Once you have your cd ready you need to boot your pc from this cd and once you have booted from CD you can see the first sceen with the boot: prompt. If you want to install  installation in graphical mode you need to write “installgui” you can see this in the following screen and after that, jusy press your “Enter” key.

1.png
Now you need to select your language here we have selected English and click on continue button using your mouse.
2.png
Next screen you can select the country in this we have selected united kingdom and click on continue.
3.png
Now you need to select your keyboard layout here we have selected British Engish and click on continue.
4.png

In the next steps the installer will do a lot of automatic work:

1) it will try to detect your cd-rom and mount automatically.
2) it will try to load installer components.
3) It will try to detect your network hardware and configure your network with DHCP settings.

If you have a usb adsl modem or any other modem which is not a network card you should seek advice from a friend or a local linux user group because the variants ar literally hundreds and we cannot go into details here. Please remember to chose a connectivity provider that doesn't bind you only to Win or Mac operating systems and overall try to have the "network" version of your modem (not usb, the one that attaches directly to your ethernet card on your pc).

Now you need to enter the hostname for your machine (I have entered as debian here) and click on continue.

9.png
Next step is you can enter the domain name (for example: - yoursite.com) and click on continue. This is not mandatory.
10.png
Now it will try to detect your hard disks guide you in partitioning your disks. In this example a virtual machine setup is used (like Vmware, VirtualPC, VirtualBox, Qemu and so on), so we chose the first “Erase entire disk” option. If you have any other operating system on your machine, you would rather like to choose the third option, and “Manually edit partition table”. Your existing partitions will show up there. This is again a fairly complicated process so seek advice from a friend or from your local linux user group. There are many tutorials on Internet about this so we will not cover this in details but remember that this is the only operation that can possibly put you in trouble so make sure you know what you are doing.

When you're done with partitioning you will need to set up root user’s password. This is the administrative account (super user) so chose a strong password (not like "debian" or "d3b1an" but more like "D3b1An!" using capital letters and special punctuation).

26.png
Then you create a normal user account which you will actually use later to work on the machine. So if this is your machine, just type in your own full name here.
27.png
Enter the password for your user two times here and click on continue.
28.png
Now it will try to install the base system progress. When it's finished select the checkbox if your machine is networked to make sure you get the latest versions of all your programs, as well as security updates.
30.png

Now you need to select your country name and mirror you want to use here and click on continue.

31.png

Now it will ask you if you want to participate in debian popularity contest (it's a way to tell to Debian developers which software the users work on more frequently) so if you want to partecipate tick the check box or otherwise don’t select the checkbox and click on continue.

Here you need to select the software you want to install in your machine and click on continue. Chose only Desktop environment and Standard system on a desktop (tower, middletower...) pc and add also Laptop system if you are installing on a notebook.

Next it will be configuring your sound settings automagically and on the next step you can select your ispell dictionaries and click on continue.

This is the finishing Installation  screen. Installation was successfully completed and you need to remove your CD from your machine and click on continue to reboot your new Debian system. That’s it: Debian Graphical-mode installation completed.

STEP 2: ADD THE ARTISTX CUSTOMIZATIONS
